Our chemicals are specific in suppressing harmful weeds, diseases, and insects of plants with minimal detriment to animals and people and without lingering in the soil where they can be washed into our lakes and rivers. But you may ask, “Why use pesticides in the first Place?” The American Council on Science and Health, a consumer education consortium whose nucleus is a board of 350 physicians, scientists, and policy advisors—experts in a wide variety of fields—concludes that, “The benefits of pesticides vastly outweigh the risks associated with them. Pesticides for home use have an excellent safety record. When used properly, pesticides do not harm humans or domestic animals.”
And the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Florida reports that, “Pesticides stand out as one of the major developments of the twentieth century . . . Certainly pesticides have improved longevity and the quality of life, chiefly in the area of public health.” |
